It was a way for the community to shame her for her adultery. Slut-shaming is a form of cyberbullying where girls are targeted on social media and bullied through degradation or humiliation for their sexuality. What this means is that girls are often ridiculed for the way they look, the way they dress and their presumed level of sexual activity. One-third of all middle and high school students experienced having someone make unwelcome sexual comments, jokes, or gestures about them.
I asked Anna if her friends joked about boys demanding nudes because it happened so often.
She's staring at the camera and smiling, little suspecting her picture will soon sit among thousands of explicit images of students being shared and swapped and rated and traded as flippantly as football cards. Some of the images exposed young girls engaged in sexual acts. The majority were nude selfies taken in the privacy of their bathrooms or bedrooms and shared by former partners, without the girls' consent. Amanda's photo in a low-cut red top and make-up was stolen from her Facebook page and posted on the online chat forum one Tuesday morning in June, by someone scouring social media for something more explicit of her.
