And the BBC has now offered a spotlight for a cross section of medically obese individuals to share their experiences of living as overweight citizens.

Even fit humans carry more body fat than other primates—chimpanzees, for example. Humans and chimpanzees have nearly identical DNA sequences. The bunching up keeps these genes inaccessible, ensuring that we maintain larger fat reserves than our primate cousins. The scientists identified roughly DNA regions that were accessible in chimps and macaques, but had become more bunched up in humans.
